Save energy and lower your energy costs!

  • CFLs use about 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs
  • CFLs emit about 90% less heat
  • CFLs can last ten times as long

More about CFLs:

  • Although CFLs are typically more expensive to purchase, they save money in the long run because they use less electricity and last longer.
  • CFLs can be used nearly anywhere that incandescent lights are used – table lamps, recessed fixtures, track lighting, ceiling fixtures and porch lights.  There are even three-way CFLs for lamps with three-way settings.
  • BulbNot all CFLs are in a spiral shape.  CFLs are also in shapes similar to incandescent light bulbs, including globes and flood lights.
  • CFLs come in soft white, bright white and day light versions.
  • CFLs do contain small amounts of mercury, about equivalent to the tip of a ballpoint pen.  When CFLs no longer work, they need to be taken to a special recycling center instead of being thrown away with your regular garbage or placed in your red recycling bin.  The closest recycling center that accepts CFLs is the Home Chemical Collection Center located at 11234 Plano Road, just north of LBJ Freeway (I-635).
  • CFLs are actually responsible for less mercury emissions than the mercury-free incandescent bulbs they replace.  The reason for this is that the large source of mercury is created during the generation of electricity.  Since a CFL uses about 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb, a CFL is responsible for far less mercury in the environment.
