Garland, Texas - Nowhere is Garland Power & Light's commitment to system reliability more evident than the Walnut Substation. When completed in the fall of 2000 Walnut will help provide service to approximately 4000 customers located in the Central Park and downtown Garland area.
The new station will house two 25 MVA transformers controlled by the latest state of the art solid state electronic relaying and monitoring equipment. It will be linked via the recently completed fiber optic communications network to GP&L's McIntire Electric Operations Center.
This is the third substation project to rely on GP&L personnel for bulk of the construction with minimum assistance from outside contractors. It is estimated this method of construction saves 30% when compared to the cost of hiring a private contractor - savings which help keep GP&L's rates competitive while improving reliability.
