GARLAND, September 17, 2003 - Garland Power & Light (GP&L) celebrates Public Power Week, October 5-11, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that provide their citizens electricity services on a not-for-profit basis.

"Electricity makes all of our lives easier, safer and more enjoyable. Public Power Week recognizes GP&L for providing affordable electricity to customers whenever and wherever it's needed. At this time, we also honor the democratic tradition of community decision-making that led to our founding in 1923," said Bill Dollar, Assistant City Manager.

"Public power's distinct characteristics, help GP&L's customers' lives become more powerful everyday while they are working, playing or enjoying the comforts of home. GP&L is driven by public service, not profit. We exist to serve our fellow citizens by saving them time and money, and by protecting their homes and environments so all community members can enjoy life with family and friends," Dollar said.

Public Power Week is celebrated in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington D.C. APPA is the service organization for community and state-owned electric utilities.
