GP&L Sends Help To Liberty, Texas

GARLAND, Texas, September 24, 2005 - Garland Power & Light (GP&L) has sent a crew to assist in power restoration in the City of Liberty, Texas. Major damage to Liberty’s electric system occurred as a result of Hurricane Rita.

A GP&L crew consisting of four linemen left Garland Saturday afternoon. They took two bucket trucks, a line truck for pole setting and, and a pickup. Additional GP&L crews are on standby to relieve the crew in Liberty should the restoration extend over a week or more.

Liberty, located 42 miles northeast of Houston, has a population of over 8,000 in a 35 square mile area. Like the City of Garland, Liberty has a municipally-owned electric system.

“Were glad we are able to provide additional resources to help another municipality recover from this major storm,” said Jim Harder, Director of Electric Utilities. “Everyone depends on electric service, and the sooner it can be repaired in Liberty, the better.”

Back home in Garland, GP&L crews are on call to repair any damage that could result from hurricane-related storms that reach North Texas.
