| GP&L Trims Trees to Prevent Power Outages
GARLAND, Texas, June 15, 2006 - Texas weather brings high winds, heavy rains and ice storms, all of which can play havoc with transmission and distribution lines. Entire neighborhoods can be left in the dark if a tree branch collapses on a line.
To prevent this problem, in the late '90s GP&L started an extensive program of trimming trees near power lines. Before then, it had been done on an as-needed basis.
"We now have a regular schedule of trimming trees along each transmission and main distribution feeder about once every year," said GP&L's James Bodine.
GP&L follows industry guidelines for vegetation management. Typically, crews trim to the right of way. No branches are permitted above power lines. The utility’s effort also includes mowing under transmission lines.
All technicians who cut branches are certified arborists, trained to minimize the negative effects of cutting the trees. GP&L contractor Asplundh conducts all scheduled trimming and mowing.
"There is no doubt that the tree-trimming program has contributed to increased reliability of GP&L's electric service over the last few years," said Bodine.
