Garland Power & Light Celebrates Public Power Week,
October 5-11
Garland, Texas – September 26, 2008 – Garland Power & Light is celebrating Public Power Week, October 5-11, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 45 million Americans.
“Public Power Week is an opportunity to recognize GP&L for its contributions to Garland,” said City Manager Bill Dollar. “GP&L not only reliably powers homes and businesses, it also provides local customer service, sponsors community events, encourages energy efficiency, and includes renewable power in its energy portfolio.”
This year, GP&L marks 85 years of providing electric service in Garland. Like other public power utilities, GP&L was created by local city and business leaders who sought to provide affordable and quality electric service to the community. From serving just a few customers in 1923, GP&L has grown to serve nearly 68,000 customers, making it the third largest municipal electric utility in Texas and the 39th largest in the nation.
Public Power Week is a national, annual event sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington, D.C. APPA is the service organization for community- and state-owned electric utilities
