GP&L Implements Rolling Blackouts to Support State Power Grid
Garland, TX, February 2, 2011 – The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the state's electricity grid, has instructed utilities, including Garland Power & Light, to begin rotating outages to compensate for a shortage of electricity in the state.
Rotating outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electric service, typically lasting approximately 15 minutes per neighborhood. GP&L is complying with the state's request and has begun implementing these rolling outages now. These outages will continue until power levels increase throughout the state.
Consumers and businesses are urged to reduce their electricity use to the lowest level possible. Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronic equipment. Thank you for your assistance during this situation.
