Electric Conservation is Still Needed This Week

Garland, TX, August 8, 2011 – With high temperatures in the forecast for the entire week, Garland Power & Light and ERCOT continue to encourage everyone to conserve power at their homes and businesses.

"The steps everyone took over the past week to reduce power consumption helped prevent the need for rotating outages. We thank you for your efforts, and encourage everyone to continue conserving power this week," said GP&L's Electric Utility Director Ray Schwertner

ERCOT recommends that consumers turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances between 3 and 7 p.m. each day this week, and delay laundry and other activities requiring electricity-consuming appliances until later in the evening.

Other conservation measures recommended by ERCOT include:

  • Turning off lights, appliances, and electronic equipment any time of the day they are not needed.
  • When at home, closing blinds and drapes that get direct sun, set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, and use fans in occupied rooms to feel cooler.
  • When away from home, setting air conditioning thermostats to 85 degrees and turning all fans off before you leave. Block the sun by closing blinds or drapes on windows that will get direct sun.
  • Not using your dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers, or other home appliances during the peak hours of 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Avoiding opening refrigerators or freezers more than necessary.
  • Using microwaves for cooking instead of an electric range or oven.
  • Setting your pool pump to run in the early morning or evening instead of the afternoon.
Businesses should minimize the use of electric lighting and electricity-consuming equipment as much as possible. Large consumers of electricity should consider shutting down or reducing non-essential production processes.
